Quick Book Review: “The Light Years” by Chris Rush
This is, hands-down, one of the best memoirs I’ve read in a long time. This is a coming of age story taking place in the 60’s and 70’s. The author’s search to find self-acceptance as a gay teenager and to earn the love and respect of his father leads him on a tumultuous, drug-fueled journey across the country. It’s a perfect mix of humor and poignancy, as the author put his fate in the hands of a variety of crazy societal outsiders. Ultimately, his recreational drug use spirals out of control and nearly kills him, before eventually finding acceptance and redemption. Tales of hitchhiking, religious cults, UFOs, and living in the wilderness, all in the name of trying to find himself, will keep you riveted. Hilarious and heartbreaking, an engaging survival story that I couldn’t put down.
